City determined to protect De La Rey stormwater pond

Earlier today, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, together with the Roads Infrastructure Management team, visited the De La Rey stormwater pond to observe as well as address ongoing vandalism and illegal dumping in the area. This stormwater pond plays a vital role in protecting homes and roads from flooding during Cape Town’s rainy season, but is often vandalised, which severely affects its operation. The City recently completed upgrades to the infrastructure to try and prevent further damage.

‘At the end of May this year, the City completed the installation of a security fence around the De La Rey pond and pump station. This is a big step toward protecting this vital infrastructure. In the past we have faced ongoing cable theft, damage to electrical boxes and even vandals crawling through stormwater pipes to access and destroy equipment. As a result, the pumps had to be removed for repairs and temporary ones are now keeping the pond functional. Daily illegal dumping has also caused blockages and foul odours. We ask that residents please report any suspicious activity and incidents related to vandalism and illegal dumping of objects into the stormwater system,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
